SCOTT reply to Dorothy Falk
August 1998
The Nashville, IL Journal had the following article in its July 24, 1864 paper: "John T. Scott, formerly of Nashville, but now living near Irvington, on the farm of A. D. Hay, was killed on Friday night last, it is supposed by the cars passing over him while on his way home from Centralia. He leaves a wife and a large family of children." My first assumption is that the word cars means railroad cars. Do you think there is any chance that the railroad company would have any additional information on this accident? Do you know the name of the railroad that ran from Centralia to Irvington then and if they passed the records on to whichever company currently runs the route? JOHN T. SCOTT was my great-grandfather and I have hit the genealogy brick wall with him. He was 40, born in TN, unskilled, and father of 7 living, the youngest was just a couple of months old. There is no record of his death in Washington County, just this newspaper clipping and a probate box. I also could not find anything in the Centralia paper or court house. Could you please help me on the name of the railroad line? Dorothy Falk 408 East Third Street O'Fallon IL 62269-2121 618-632-3483

CLAUGHLIN, BENNETT, MORTON, PARKINSON, BLAIR reply to Brian McLaughlin
July 1998
Around the mid 1840s, there was a large migration of families from the middle of Tennessee to Marion County, and my families were part of that movement. The BENNETTS were deep rooted in Wilson County, TN, while the MORTONS, PARKINSONS and BLAIRS came to Illinois after a short spurt in Tenn. and a longer one in South Carolina. The MCLAUGHLINS have their roots in County Antrim, Ireland. James MCLAUGHLIN, my GGGGgrandfather, was born in 1816, while his wife Anne Eliza LYONS, was born in Ireland in 1815. I don't know a whole lot about them beyond that. One of their sons, Joseph Knox MCLAUGHLIN (b: 1850) is my direct ancestor and married Tirza Elvira MORTON (b: 1851, daughter of James MORTON and Mary PARKINSON), and their son James Calvin MCLAUGHLIN (b: 1875) was my next ancestor in the line. James Calvin MCLAUGHLIN married Mora BENNETT in 1899 in Marion County. My families lived about five miles south of Salem, in the Romine Township area on a farm. Apparently, the Interstate may have cut right through the old McLaughlin property. I know that the original James McLaughlin was living with Ann Eliza with their son Thomas Calvin in Marion County in 1850, because of the census. Please respond with any inquiries.
